Staying ahead in any global market is an essential factor. This focus is especially critical in the manufacturing sector. It requires more than expertise—it demands collaboration, innovation, and strategic vision. On this episode of VistaTalks, Host Simon Hodgkins is joined by Caitríona Mordan, Cluster Manager of atim (Advanced Technologies in Manufacturing) cluster, to explore how the organization is shaping the future of manufacturing. From digital transformation to sustainability and workforce development, Caitríona shared valuable insights into the critical role of clusters in fostering industry growth and global success.
A Cluster with a Vision for the Future
Since being established in 2021, the atim cluster was created to support Irish manufacturers in adapting to industry 4.0, 5.0, and beyond. With over 70 members spanning engineering, polymer, food and drink, medical devices, and technology solutions, atim acts as a bridge between industry, academia, and government to accelerate innovation and enhance competitiveness.
„Ireland’s Midlands region has a significantly higher concentration of people employed in manufacturing than the national average,“ Caitríona explained. „That means we need to ensure that our companies stay at the cutting edge of digitalization and sustainability, or they risk falling behind in an increasingly competitive global market.“
Through strategic partnerships and targeted initiatives, atim provides a platform for businesses to share knowledge, access expertise, and embrace emerging technologies—ensuring Ireland remains a leader in advanced manufacturing.
Collaboration as a Competitive Advantage
A key takeaway from Caitríona’s discussion was the power of collaboration. atim actively connects companies, researchers, and policymakers to solve industry challenges that individual organizations might struggle with alone.
For example, one of the cluster’s early initiatives tackled a critical issue facing Midlands manufacturers—talent attraction and retention. The Dream BIG program (Digitalization, Robotics, Engineering, Automation, and Materials) was launched to showcase career opportunities in manufacturing to young people in the region. What started with 27 students and five companies in its first year has now grown to 91 students across four counties in 2024, engaging over 120 industry professionals.
„This program is about building a pipeline of future talent,“ Caitríona said. „We want young people to see the incredible opportunities that exist in advanced manufacturing right here on their doorstep.“
Beyond talent development, atim also fosters cross-sectoral collaborations, such as working with Cyber Ireland on cybersecurity for manufacturing and partnering with the Bioeconomy cluster on sustainable packaging solutions.
Sustainability & Digital Transformation: The Path to Global Competitiveness
With Industry 5.0 placing a strong emphasis on sustainability, atim is helping companies navigate climate regulations, circular economy principles, and energy efficiency measures.
Through its Corporate Social Responsibility Directive (CSRD) boot camp, atim provided free training in partnership with KPMG, Irish Manufacturing Research, and Reshape. The program equips businesses with the knowledge they need to comply with sustainability reporting requirements and integrate greener practices.
„Many Irish companies have built long-term relationships with European clients based on excellent service,“ Caitríona noted. „But if they don’t meet sustainability requirements, those relationships won’t be enough to keep the business. Companies need to be proactive.“
On the digital transformation front, atim is helping manufacturers adopt smart technologies by providing access to testbed facilities and expert guidance. Whether it’s automation, AI-driven analytics, or IoT integration, the cluster ensures that businesses implement digital solutions that are tailored to their specific needs—rather than adopting technology for technology’s sake.
The Power of Clusters: A Model for Success
Atim’s approach mirrors the success of established European clusters, which have driven industrial competitiveness for decades. By joining the European Cluster Collaboration Platform, atim is actively engaging in international networks, European funding opportunities, and market expansion initiatives for Irish manufacturers.
„We’re constantly looking at how we can leverage global connections to create new opportunities for our members,“ Caitríona explained. „Whether it’s through European partnerships, shared projects with Northern Ireland, or direct market linkages, collaboration is key.“
Looking Ahead: What’s Next for atim?
As atim continues to expand its network and support system for manufacturers, Caitríona remains deeply committed to the region and the industry she serves.
„I live in the Midlands, and I’m passionate about seeing these businesses thrive,“ she said. „We have world-class companies here, and if we can help them navigate challenges, embrace innovation, and stay competitive, that’s what drives me every day.“
With a focus on sustainability, digitalization, talent development, and global collaboration, atim is not just supporting manufacturing companies—it’s shaping the future of the industry.
